Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Sardar Muhammad Khan Leghari has emerged as a strong contender for the position of Punjab chief minister.

Leghari, who is the son of Sardar Maqsood Ahmed Khan Leghari, won seats from NA-192 Dera Ghazi Khan and PP-292 Dera Ghazi Khan in the July 25 polls.

He defeated Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz president Shehbaz Sharif from NA-192 Dera Ghazi Khan constituency, securing 80,522 votes against Sharif's 67,608 votes.

Leghari also defeated PML-N’s Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari to win provincial assembly seat from PP-292 Dera Ghazi Khan, securing 32,423 votes against his opponent's 32,170 votes.

Leghari comes from a long line of politicians. His grandfather Sardar Mahmood Khan Leghari served as a member of Punjab Assembly from 1972-77 and as an MNA during 1965, while his father served as Punjab Assembly MPA during 1977, 1988-90, 1990-93, 1993-96 and 1997-99.

His father also served as provincial minister during 1988-89 and 1993-96 while his uncle, Sardar Mansoor Leghari, was also an MNA and MPA in Punjab Assembly.
